RULES, REGULATIONS & GUIDELINES

Kindness First. Always.

This event reflects not only Kris’s passion for the ride, but also his incredible kindness, inclusion, and belief that cycling is for everyone. We welcome riders of all abilities to join us, and we expect experienced cyclists to support, encourage, and uplift those who are newer or less familiar with group riding. A positive, welcoming ride experience is at the core of Kris’s legacy - and we honour that by showing up for one another with patience, generosity, and respect.

The following are the rules for riding the Kris Yip Memorial Fondo (KYMF). Anyone violating these rules or subsequent versions of these rules is subject to removal from the event:

Event Cancellation

  • The Kris Yip Memorial Fondo, under and at the discretion of event organizers, municipal and provincial authorities, as well as regional law enforcement, reserves the right to cancel or alter any of the events due to unforeseen circumstances or emergency purposes such as, but not limited to weather events and related consequences (e.g. flooding), hostile threats, highway closures mandated by provincial or other authorities, wildfires and/or population health and safety concerns. If such conditions force cancellation, refunds cannot be provided. See refunds below.

Refunds

  • Refunds are not available. However, participants may request to roll their registration over to the following year, subject to approval on an individual basis.

Deferral Policy

  • Participants can defer their entry to the following year in the event of an injury or scheduling conflict. It is important to note that this policy is only in effect until June 13, at 11:59 am (PST), and ALL deferrals must be made before that date and time. After this point, we will have applied for all permits, purchased all event materials and confirmed the budget for complimentary meals, meaning that we have committed all registrations to the event, with no possibility of getting these funds back.

Not Completing the Event

  • In circumstances where an individual is involved in an accident or mechanical that limits or completely hinders their ability to finish, no refunds will be processed to the participant.

Helmets

  • Helmets are MANDATORY and must be worn correctly and fastened at all times.

Tri-bars/Aerobars

  • Bikes with tri-bars/aerobars will not be permitted.
*In special circumstances, exceptions can be made. Please reach out to us at krisyipmemorialfondo@gmail.com

Non-standard bicycles (e.g. tandem bicycles, recumbents, race wheelchairs etc.)

  • KYMF requires non-standard bikes to exercise extreme caution. The majority of riders may not be familiar with non-standard bicycles. The KYMF staff may require non-standard bicycles to start at the back of the group. Due to size issues, it may not be possible to transport these bicycles back to the finish area should you require it.

Electric Bikes or eBikes

Permitted under the following conditions:

  • The bike must be speed-limited to 32km/h.
  • Riders must start at the back of the start corral.
  • Riders must respect the effort of self-propelled riders and stay out of pace lines.

Stay Aware, Ride with Care

Look for obstacles (this includes wildlife, livestock, horses and riders) and ride safely and predictably. Don’t swerve and weave, keep your head up, and ride in a single file when possible. Please be aware of and exercise good road-riding etiquette.

RBC Gran Fondo Whistler has an informative video here about safely riding in a group.

  • Be aware of others around you and communicate well in advance while cycling. Use gestures in combination with verbal commands. Pass on the left only. It is recommended that cyclists advise others that they are about to pass – politely saying “on your left” upon approaching a rider usually does the trick. Ride with your head up. Look down the road, not at the person in front of you.
  • If you stop while on course, signal to the riders behind and pull over safely. Our on-course support team (mechanics, ride marshals, medical staff) may ask you to indicate whether or not you need assistance. If you’re okay, then signal with a “thumbs-up” to say, “Everything’s good with me.”
  • Caution for potential wildlife and livestock on routes. Respect horses and riders, announce your presence and give plenty of space when passing.

Know your Route

It is each rider’s responsibility to know the route they have chosen. Course maps for all distances are available on Strava and should be reviewed in advance. While we will have signage and volunteers along the course to help guide you, riders must be familiar with where they are riding and where their designated turnaround point is for their selected distance, in the event that signage is obstructed, removed, or missed.

Road Rules

Obey all directions from police, traffic control personnel, or course marshals. Riders MUST give way to emergency vehicles. Where the route has a delineated lane closure (e.g. cones), crossing into the non-delineated lane is strictly prohibited. Many roads are open to traffic. It is up to each rider to be aware of the open road sections, to obey the BC Motor Vehicle Act, and to keep as far right as possible. Do not cross the centre line (whether it is marked or not) at any time. Any rider crossing the centre line, riding dangerously, or found to be violating other rules of the road will be disqualified without warning. Disqualification will result from the report of any KYMF staff, volunteer, course marshal, Traffic Control Person, RCMP officer, or Ministry of Transportation Official. All disqualifications are final and will not be subject to appeal.

    • “Stay to the Right”: Unless passing another rider, ensure that you stay as far to the right of the road as you can; making it easy for traffic and other riders to pass you safely on the left.
    • Course: It is your responsibility to know and follow the route.
    • No personal support vehicles on course: Please let us take care of you on your ride. Avoid clogging up the route with additional cars and trucks.
    • No unregistered riders: Riders found on a course for which they are not registered will be charged accordingly.
    • Timing tag and number placement: All participants must mount their tag and number according to the instructions supplied in the rider package.
    • Start Zones: Please position yourself appropriately at the start line. Faster more experienced riders towards the front and slower less experienced riders down the line.
    • No personal audio devices (iPod, headphones, etc.): These devices present distractions, and ultimately place you and other riders at risk of accident.
    • No littering: Throwing anything on the ground during the ride will result in removal from the event.
    • No public urination: Facilities are provided on the course (aid stations) and at the Finish area.
    • Caravan vehicles: Riders must heed instructions from course officials. Do not pass the Lead Event Vehicle at any time.
    • Cut-off times: For course management and road safety, cut-off times will be established for each route. Riders outside of these times will be asked to leave the course, and you will be offered a ride to the finish area. The finish line closes at 3:30 p.m.
    • Treat course workers and volunteers with kindness and respect: We want our volunteers to stay safe and have a great time too. Abuse of volunteers will not be tolerated; smiles and thank-you’s will.
    • Right to refuse entry: The event organizers reserve the right to refuse entry into the event if a participant violates any of the above rules.
    • No sprint zone: The finish timing loop will be placed on 1st Ave or Dominion (TBD). Please reduce speed from here to Canada Games Plaza. Absolutely no sprinting along Canada Games Way.

Timing Chips

Timing chips are provided so riders can see their own ride time and so our team can safely monitor everyone on course. They’re simply a tool for personal tracking, not a measure of competition.

The Fondo isn’t a race. You’re welcome to challenge yourself, take a steady pace, or enjoy the scenery. Ride in the way that feels right for you, knowing timing chips help keep the event organized and every rider accounted for.
